Lamaze's Approach to Birth
- Birth is normal, natural and healthy.
- The experience of birth profoundly affects women and their families.
- Women's inner wisdom guides them through birth.
- Women's confidence and ability to give birth is either enhanced or diminished by the care provider and place of birth.
- Women have the right to give birth free from routine medical interventions.
- Birth can safely take place in homes, birth centers and hospitals.
- Childbirth education empowers women to make informed choices in health care, to assume responsibility for their health and to trust their inner wisdom.
My classes involve lots of hands on activites and group discussion! No lectures here! Every woman's birth is different and Lamaze classes prepare you to enter the labor room with confidence.

A STUDENT'S BIRTH STORY*******************************
My birth experience was amazing. My water broke around 2:30pm with meconium in it. Of course that messed up my birth plan of wanting to labor at home first. I arrived at the hospital around 3:45pm. When I was checked I had already dialted to 4 cm, and 70% effaced. Vicki, my midwife, said that she won't bother us after this and let us do what we do. So, of course we set the atmosphere like we would have at home. We had relaxation music playing, and I stayed out of the bed the entire time. I couldn't walk far because I was hooked to monitors, but we made it work. We labored on the side of the bed. The laboring techniques we used were the swaying, the hanging position, the birthing ball (which I didn't like in class, but loved during labor. I stayed on the birthing ball the majority of the time), massage, hip squeeze, peppermint aromatherapy, and lights out. I also, ate and drunk water and juice during labor. At around 10:45pm I felt a lot of pressure and the nurse checked me and said I was 5.5cm. I was in disbelief and thought she was mistaken. After that I went to the restroom, but nothing came out. The pressure was more intense. I asked for a second nurse to check me roughly 5-10mins later. She said I was at 7-8cm. She then got Vicki and she checked me and said I was ready to push. I was on all fours when I was ready to deliver. The midwife wanted to get a heartbeat, but couldn't get it through the monitor. She then proceeded to begin administering the monitoring device by placing it on the baby's scalp. I moaned no and my husband stepped in and began to ask the questions. She then said we didn't have to do it and the alternative would be for me to turn on my side, which I did. They were able to get the heartbeat while I was on my side, but this position wasn't comfortable for me. I then changed positions again to my back. From there, I pushed and she was born at 11:22PM.This was an amazing birth experience. I know that I couldn't have done it without what I learned in your class. Thank you! I also couldn't have done it without my husband being very supportive. He did an awesome job.
