What is a Monitrice? Why do I want one?
A Monitrice is a woman who is trained to offer all the same support that a doula offers, plus the added benefit of cervical checks, fetal heart tones, and blood pressure checks. She offers this not to make medical decisions for you but to empower you with information that will help you best decide when to go to the hosptial in labor. She does not provide these services once at the hospital. A monitrice has received training in clinical skills outside of normal doula training and offers these services to help women who want to labor at home as long as they would like. She educates a woman and her partner about what normal labor signs are. She does not provide homebirths. As your monitrice, I encourage you to talk with your provider about my services. Some women choose to hire a monitrice to offer home services and not accompany them to the hospital.
